Thursday January 30, 2020

Today we...
-had IGNITE centers focusing on building and art as well as a printing group going
-we had a quick chat in our morning meeting about returning library books, book truck books and home reading (and finding their folders)
-we continued our work on telling stories in a variety of ways: loose parts, watercolor pencils, felt boards and using post its
-we worked in our math groups on problem solving and reviewing strategies for addition and subtraction
-a great website for math problem solving and more: https://mathbeforebed.com
-Our Inquiry groups continued our focus on the 3 communities.  Peace Group B continued their animal research on either puffins, polar bears and sea otters.  We worked on learning about the food chain/web for these animals, what is the difference between a fact and an opinion and sorted sentence strips with animal facts into the correct animal group (i.e. They have webbed feet for swimming and waterproof feathers for swimming=puffin)

Report cards are now available for viewing online (tip: computer works best over viewing on phones)

Have a wonderful long weekend and enjoy the dance if you are going!

Reminders:

Warm Feet and Hands

This week, the Eric Harvie Peace Ambassadors are collecting warm, new or gently used, adult sized socks and hats for Calgary's homeless. After our recent cold spell, supplies are low at our city's shelters and we want to help to fill them back up before the next cold snap hits. There are collection bins and a display in the hub where students can drop off donations during ignite time each day.
Please ensure:

  • socks are ADULT sizes
  • gently used socks and hats are washed and do not have any holes
  • socks are rolled into pairs
  • they are high enough to cover cold ankles
Peace Ambassadors will be at our upcoming Sock Hop on Thursday evening to take donations as well!
If you would prefer to donate to our coin collection, Mrs. Zwack will happily purchase socks and hats.

Thank you for supporting our Warm Feet and Heads project!

Week 2 Swimming is from February 3-7th. Please see previous blog post for additional information.

Report Cards

This is the very first time at EHS that report cards will not be printed but shared online through PowerSchool. They will be available on January 30th and will look the same as they did in the past. Please follow this link for additional information on how to access them.

Some highlights from our day:

Ignite:
Students worked collaboratively on art and building projects today to help them get ready for learning. Take a look at the photos below.

Literacy:
Students continued to rotate through stations today to be introduced a different way of planning out a narrative. Just like yesterday, students were either learning how to use sticky notes, a felt board, loose parts or create art cards to plan out a story. Students also practiced telling their stories orally, making sure to add interesting details.

Inquiry:
Group A continued to learn about the past of the NW coastal region and Vancouver Island. We found out that James Cook sailed to the Island on a ship in the 1700s. We did a guided drawing of this type of ship to show how transportation changes through time. We will continue to explore changes in transportation and building over time.

Group B learned about different animals in the arctic region. Some students learned about sea ottters and that they eat plants like seaweed and animals such as fish, shrimp and crab.

Tuesday January 28, 2020

Highlights of our day:
-IGNITE had some new literacy and math centers
-some of us had a Roots of Empathy post baby visit where we talked about sleep patterns and read a story called Daniel's Day
-we had literacy centers and guided reading groups today
-we worked in 4 different groups to learn some new ways to tell stories using either loose parts, felt boards, post-it notes and index cards/watercolor paints-ask you child which group they were in today
-today was the second day we worked in our new math groups
-today your child came home with a new Home Reading page (pink paper), please let us know if your child did not get one or was away today and did not receive one
-Ms. Disher's group continued with the challenge to "find the value of a picture".  We have been using cuisenaire rods (a math manipulative/blocks) to create pictures then add up the values of the blocks.  Once we solved our problem of value, kids were challenged to create a new picture and the value had to be more than 100.   They are currently working on this and strategies for adding multiple numbers.  Below is the value of each color.  Look at the two pictures created by students and see if you can find the value (add up the total number of blocks):

white=1
red=2
light green=3
purple=4
yellow=5
dark green=6
black=7
brown=8
blue=9
orange=10

Our Day:

Roots of Empathy:
We had our baby visits today. It was a delight to see how they are all growing and changing. Students asked interesting questions and learned more about how babies sleep and about transition objects. Students continue to make keen observations about baby's behaviour and feelings.

Math: We are continuing with problem solving and looking at different strategies for addition and subtraction.
Some students played Rainbow Bump - in this game they had to roll 3 dice, add the sum and cover the matching space on the game board. If their opponent rolled the same sum they could be "bumped" off of that space. Students demonstrated their knowledge of adding skills, such as counting the dots the dice, counting on, adding 2 dice and adding the third and using mental math skills.

Literacy: We had literacy centres and read to self. In word work we were given mixed up letters that spell out the big world 'students' to see how many smaller words we could make. Ask you child about some different word families they make have discovered.

Inquiry: Group B was working on creating what the coastal region looked like before colonization. We used loose parts to show our thinking.
