It's looking like another beautiful, sunny day! The weather has been on quite a back and forth lately, so we hope you're able to get out and enjoy the sun while it's here.

Today’s Job: Adding and Subtracting with Legs

Subject: Mathematics  

Technology: 
  • Printer (optional)
  • Computer/Tablet/Phone 
Materials: 
  • Pencil 
  • Writing notebook or visual journal
  • Scissors (optional)
  • PDF printouts (this print out is an optional material that may help students quickly show their thinking when working out the math problems) PDF 1 / PDF 2
Support: 
Parents/guardians may need to help explain the instructions and read out the questions. If you chose to use the supplementary PDF printouts, parents/guardians will need to facilitate the printing and oversee the cutting of the paper. 

Timeframe: 
Read-Aloud - 5 min
Task - 30 min 

Task:
Please complete tasks #1-5

1. Listen to the story,  One Is a Snail, Ten Is a Crab, read aloud by Mr. Kai.

2. Warm Up:  With a partner, count to 100 together.

3. List the animals (written or drawn) from the book in your notebook or journal and record their value next to them. Your work should look something like this:

4. Using the list of animals you’ve just created, list which animals are needed to equal 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19.  Ex.  A crab and snail is eleven. 










5. How many ways can you make the number sixteen (16) using the animals from the book? You can use the same animals more than once. 


Tasks #6-10 are extension tasks to provided more challenge if needed.

6. How many legs does one crab, five people, and two dogs have? 



7. Add the legs of two crabs, three people, one dog, one insect, and one snail. How many is that? 



8. Now take away one dog and the snail. How many legs do you have now? 



9. How many ways can you make twenty-four (24) with the animals? You can use the same animals more than once. 


10. Take away (subtract) one insect from twenty-four (24). How much does that equal?
